Equipment Operator

(4-6 month Term)

The City of West Kelowna’s Public Works Department is looking for an experienced Equipment Operator to join our team in this temporary 4-6 month position. The focus of this term position will be to support the City’s Unidirectional Flushing Program with the operation of a tri-axel water truck and tank trailer.

Summarized Position Responsibilities:

The Equipment Operator will work under the direction of the Supervisor and Foreman and will be responsible to safely and effectively operate various equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders along with tandem/tri axel trucks with trailers etc. As an equipment operator, you will be required to perform regular equipment inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs. The successful applicant will need to have the ability to work flexible hours, including shift work and emergency call outs.

Preference will be given to a skilled Equipment Operator holding a valid Class 1 License with extensive truck and trailer operational experience, strong knowledge of working safely on roadways and related WorkSafeBC Regulation.

Our Ideal Candidate:

• Grade 12 education
• 5 years of experience working on the construction and/or repair and maintenance of municipal infrastructure
• 3 years of experience operating the types of equipment identified in the Summarized Position Responsibilities section above
• Valid Class 1 B.C. Driver’s License with air endorsement
• Occupational First Aid Level I
• Completion of Heavy Equipment Operators training (Preferred)
• Past experience training others in the safe operation of equipment (Preferred)
• Extensive truck and trailer operational experience
• Adequate physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform assigned duties in all types of weather, sometimes in the presence of noise, odor, dust, and dampness
• Knowledge of safe working and operating procedures related to equipment and tools as required to ensure the safety of other employees and the public
• Mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate all valves, levers, and other controls on the equipment
• Proficiency in the safe operation of all equipment within the CWK fleet
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Able to courteously deal with the public and co-workers under stressful conditions and / or tight timelines
• Ability to work flexible hours, including shift work and emergency call outs
